We've all seen the news and flashes of heart breaking pictures. We've heard the stories of the poverty and brokenness on a monumental scale throughout this continent. But at the same time, we know that the church is growing rapidly as thousands gather to proclaim the name of the Lord in Kenya and other African nations. Although Kenya is considered a "Christian Nation," there is still great need to bring the message of Jesus Christ so others can hear about the love, peace, and life that comes through a relationship with Christ. SQ will partner with a local ministry called Youngsters for Christ Team (YCT) in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
YCT is a group of 16-30 year olds who have a passion for reaching their peers by sharing how their relationship with Jesus has transformed lives. They are located in the second largest slum in Sub-Saharan Africa called Kibera (Key-bear-ah).
- There are approximately 1.3 million people in Kibera and 78% of them are below the age of 35. - About 90% of residents of Kibera are low income earners, living on less than $1 USD per day. - Provision of basic human needs is not guarenteed from one day to the next, thus leading to many problems erupting in homes and around the slum.
Trip Summary
After our training camp in Minneapolis, we will travel to the city of Nairobi and work in Kibera (Key-bear-ah), the second largest slum in Africa, while training with and competing against local university teams. It is in this setting that we, together with YCT, we will be leading basketball clinics and competing against local teams, building relationships and impacting eternity! We will then fly 500 miles to the Rift Valley province of Northern Kenya to live amongst the Samburu Tribe leading basketball clinics “in the bush” with local youth. The project ends with a two-day safari in some of the most breathtaking views Africa has to offer. The people, the culture, the love, and the smiles will draw you in and will change your life forever!
