Growing up as an orphan in Nigeria, Lawson faced severe challenges, and for him soccer became the way to escape a life of poverty.  In 1998, as a professional soccer player and businessman, Lawson’s talents took him to Eastern Europe. However, this is where his dream of a long and prosperous soccer career ended. As one door closed, God opened another and led Lawson to Kishinev Bible Church in Moldova, where Lawson began to exchange his personal ambitions for a deep trust in God’s plan for his life. The pastor invited Lawson to attend a local Bible study and from that point on, he has never looked back. Lawson returned to Nigeria in 2000 and founded Crossway Evangelical Ministries Worldwide and Generational Sports International. Lawson now serves full-time with SportQuest ministering throughout West Africa on the soccer field and in churches and bringing community transformation through sport. Lawson has a beautiful wife, Joy, and six children – Jennifer, Samuel, Overcomer, Faith, Love; and Davida.

Lawson Sampson

SQ West Africa Director

Lawson organizes a competitive soccer league for schools in his region in which about 300 players participate.  Out of these 300, Lawson selects the top 65 to train and disciple year-round using whole-life coaching.  As a gifted evangelist, he shares the Gospel regularly with his players and anyone whom God puts in his path.  He is also sharing the vision for sports ministry in Nigerian churches while offering training for church leaders and volunteers who want to begin doing sports ministry themselves.

Lawson has a vision to see sports ministry movements all over Nigeria and West Africa.  As he make disciples, he is seeing these disciples grow as leaders who also make disciples.  Ultimately, Lawson is trusting God for a whole-life community center that provides a place for impoverished youth to live, eat, and serve as well as receive athletic training and biblical discipleship.
